Fascial Release
Fascia is the connective tissue that flows throughout our bodies, connecting, surrounding and supporting the bones, tendons, muscles and organs, allowing our body to communicate on a cellular, chemical level. I liken fascia to a layered body stocking which needs to remain fluid for our bodies to function smoothly and with ease.
Fascial release – also known as myofascial release - is a gentle and effective form of hands-on soft tissue work which aims to reduce pain & stiffness by working with the fascial layer of the body to release restrictions, helping the body to move more freely and without pain. These restrictions and adhesions can form through physical or emotional trauma, poor posture, repetitive movements, everyday tension, and general ageing, which can lead to pain and discomfort throughout the body.
What to expect from a treatment
Although you may come for a treatment with specific aches and pains, the treatment often takes us to other areas of the body and can cover the whole of the body, from the back, neck, shoulders and arms to the legs and feet as the fascia supports every area of the body.
The treatment itself is very different to what most of us think of as ‘massage’ – the key being that with fascial work we aren’t so much doingsomething to the body, as allowing the fascia to release itself and return to its natural state.
It’s an intuitive form of massage, where I take time to settle and use a ‘listening touch’ to guide me to areas where your body needs to release and let go of holding patterns.
Although you might feel some discomfort, the sensations are generally quite gentle. The more you relax into any sensation, the easier it is for the body to release. Overall, the feeling tends to be one of physical letting go and emotional calm. Some clients feel nothing but are surprised when the session is finished that some pain has eased, or they generally feel lighter and can move more easily. Nearly all clients experience fascial release as relaxing and feel rested and more balanced afterwards. It’s a gentle, yet profound way of easing chronic pain and can also release stuck emotions
